VOLK FIELD COMMUNITY COUNCIL (VFCC) WHITE PAPER
PURPOSE
The Volk Field Community Council (VFCC) is being created to support the Volk Field Air National Guard Base (ANGB) and the future of the Aerospace Industry in Wisconsin and the Midwestern Region.
The primary mission of the VFCC is to support the Volk Field ANGB’s mission, relationships and initiatives with their personnel, local community, all level of public officials and all those impacting and influencing their base operations and economic impact.
In addition, the VFCC commits to work with Volk Field ANGB to (1) Inspire the next generation of aerospace professionals, (2) Develop access to aerospace industry and careers for rural students and adults, and (3) Support aerospace networks, initiatives and opportunities.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
After years of planning and environmental impact analysis, as well as public review and comments, the Federal Aviation Administration officially expanded the military operations area in Central Wisconsin, which now provides an enhanced training environment for the latest aircraft. An expansion of the Volk Field Special Activity Airspace (VFSAA) near the Volk Field Combat Readiness Training Center (CRTC) in Camp Douglas, Wisconsin, became reality in late 2016.
Expanding the VFSAA provides Wisconsin and the Midwest with a training area that can accommodate emerging fighter and bomber units that would otherwise be forced to deploy to more costly, limited access airspace venues elsewhere to fulfill their training requirements. The VFSAA also ensures units like the 115th Fighter Wing can access a premier training area within minutes of takeoff for years to come. Fighters, bombers, RPAs, tankers, tactical airlift, cargo, mobility, helicopters, and command and control platforms all use Volk Field CRTC.
Volk Field has already been able to leverage their VFSAA to support a significant win for Wisconsin. In December, 2017, it was announced that the 115th Fighter Wing at Truax Field in Madison was selected as a finalist to be home to a squadron of 18 new F-35 fighter jets – a significant impact on the decision was its proximity to Volk Field’s unique airspace.
CONCLUSION
Over the next years, Volk Field will be developing and implementing a strategy to secure funding for critical base improvements to support the upcoming F-35 and other system training. This process will require leadership from the VFCC in support of the base’s mission and to inspire the next generation of aerospace professionals.
